La Paz must qualify as one of the most dramatically located cities in the world. It is protected from cold winds within a steep canyon just below the edge of the altiplano. The city skyline is dominated by huge buildings and the snow-capped peaks of Mount Illamani (6439 m) with a population of nearly 1.3 million. La Paz is now a modern city with few colonial buildings left except around from Plaza Murillo, which at 3636 m above sea level, marks the heart of the city The sprawling high town (4082m) is the poor relative of the city and sits on the edge of the plateau exposed to icy winds. La Paz is a great market, one of the famous ones is the Witches’ Market. From La Paz you can make excursions to Tihuanacu, the valley of the moon, and more.
